Journal #1 Weeks 1-3

Corporate responsibility
Journal # 1
Week 3

For my first journal I would like to start of my introducing myself and explain a little bit about what I’m try achieve.

My name is Lacey Robertson and I am currently a second year business student. I have worked in the fashion industry for almost five years now. I am making this blog to inform people about corporate responsibility in the fashion industry and the mistakes it has made with out corporate social responsibility. I will also be explaining and reflecting on my thoughts and opinions on the topics I have covered in my Corporate Responsibility class.

In week one the teacher explained the expectations of the class and the course load.  He also showed us a short video about the education system and how it needs to be updated. It was called Changing Education Paradigms by RSA animate. I thought it was really educational and it was something I never thought about before but related to a lot. Being some who doesn’t fit into the age group, I can really see how this true because I don’t feel as if I fit into the academic group, I felt out of place or slower then the other kid. Now the people who did well aren’t anymore, it seems to relate.

Another thing the video mentioned was Divergent thinking which reminded me of the movie “Divergent”. In the movie there is a place that puts people into 1 of the 5 groups based on there family but when they turn into an adult they have one chance to change there destiny. The main character in the movie decides to changes groups when this day comes. She realises that everyone is being manipulated into doing horrible things and tries to stop it because of that she ends up being banished and hunted. This is like an extreme version of our society because we follow the footsteps of the people before us, if our families are poor it is likely we will be poor when we are older and visa versa. “The richer get rich and the poorer get poor.”

One last thing that I thought was interesting and which I believe is very true. Is the fact that more and more people are given prescriptions for “ADHD” for being distracted by hundreds of things that are being presented to us. My nephew is 7 years old and his teacher request that my sister get his “ADHD” treated. I believe kids are more distracted by the smallest things and it seems obvious to me that a seven year old or any age wouldn’t be concentrated on school especially when it isn’t something he wants to do. I don’t believe people should be treated for being distracted when advertisements, changes, and products are being shoved in their faces.
“Actions, indeed, is the sole medium of expression for ethics.”
-       Jane Addams
I like this quote because it means how we act is shows us what we believe to be ethical. If you would never steal because you think is wrong but you think its okay to lie to your boss about the reason for missing work, you clearly think stealing is unethical because you value property. I believe in the Deontological theory because if the nature of your action is bad and your intentions are bad then the outcome in obvious.  I also value the consequence and principle more often.

In week two we learned about business structures. We know that right and wrong is based on your judgement and ethics/values/morals are different for everyone. Depending on the situation and your perception, what is right to one could be wrong to another. We discussed the ford pinto story and how they can put a dollar value on a life. I don’t believe that is ethical at all because how can you pay off someone’s pain, you just cant, no money will make you feel better if someone you know dies in the car. I think the report on tobacco companies studying ways to hook female smokers was really interesting because I happen to be a smoker. The thing I found interesting is that most smokers have no idea about the tar and nicotine levels in cigarettes because some countries have the cigarettes labelled with the ingredients used and the levels but In Canada we don’t do that, I wonder why?

In week three we watched the being of “The Corporation” a great film documentary based on corporate responsibility, privatization and the impacts of business. One of the questions the teacher asked us was “How do you define Greed”, I defined it as “Taking more then you need”, how would you define it? I found out that I really value property and that I am more conscience about the principle and outcome of what I am doing, I think of these to decide if my actions are ethical or not.
